Syracuse Orange men's basketball squared off in their second game of the season by welcoming the Colgate Raiders to the Dome for their 173rd meeting all-time.
The Orange came in winning the last 54 contests between the two and owned a 127-45 overall record versus the Raiders.
Colgate began this match-up by going 0-for-11 from long range, but would follow by making 11 of their next 17 attempts before halftime, totaling 33 of their 46 first-half points from beyond the arc.
Their prowess from three-point aided the Raiders to a three-point lead going into the locker room, 46-43, over the Orange.
A 17-10 run to open the second half gave Colgate a double-digit advantage, 63-53, right by the 12-minute mark.
The last time Syracuse held the lead was back at the 1:58 mark of the first half, 41-38, off of a three from senior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim.
Colgate would move back out to a 10-point lead off of a corner three by senior guard Oliver Lynch-Daniels with 10:23 left to go in the game, moving the score to 68-58 Raiders.
Back-to-back threes by junior guard Joe Girard, III, would get the Orange within two possessions, 70-64, with 9:19 to play.
An old-fashioned three-point play at the rim for graduate forward Jimmy Boeheim made it a two-possession game once again for Syracuse, this time down 81-75 with 5:02 remaining.
With 2:28 to go, Syracuse starting center, junior Jesse Edwards, fouled out. He finished with eight points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and one assist in 26 minutes.
Newcomers, senior forward Cole Swider and true freshman forward Benny Williams, would try to give the Orange some life, coming to score six points inside the arc, but the Raiders were too much, never rescinding the lead for the entire second hal.
Colgate put 100 on Syracuse in the Dome to win their first game against Syracuse in the 21st century, ending the contest 100-85.
The last time Syracuse lost to Colgate was pre-Jim Boeheim coaching era, back on February 24, 1962, by a score of 67-63 during the 1961-62 season in Syracuse, New York. That win was the fourth in a row for the Raiders, defeating the Orange twice in the 1960-61 and 1961-62 seasons.
With the victory, Colgate gets back above .500 at 3-2, while Syracuse takes their first loss of the season, moving to 2-1.
The Orange gave up 19 offensive rebounds in the game and were out-rebounded by 10 overall, 44 to 34.
Colgate would make 18 deep shots in total, 11 in the first half and seven in the second, going 41.9% from beyond the arc, on 43 attempts.
Graduate guard Jack Ferguson led all Raiders with 25, followed by senior guard Nelly Cummings with 18 and senior guard Tucker Richardson with 11.
Girard led all scorers on both teams with 27, going 8-for-14 from the field, including 5-for-8 from three-point range. The Boeheim brothers were the other players to score in double-figures for Syracuse, Buddy with 19 and Jimmy had 11 on the night.
