The Binghamton University Bearcats Women's Basketball program has their head coach as they embark on a new chapter, with Mary Grimes traveling an hour down Interstate-81 to accept the position.
Grimes is coming off of her first stint as a head coach, spending three seasons leading the LeMoyne Dolphins Women's Basketball program. Her records by season as a head coach, all at LeMoyne, are 17-8 (2021-22 season), 21-7 (2022-23 season), and 18-15 (2023-24 season), for a total overall head-coaching record of 56-30.
She, returning to LeMoyne after being an assistant coach to former head coaches Jeanne Dupree (2003-05) and Gina Castelli (2017-19), led the Dolphins in two seasons at the NCAA Division II level and in this past season guided the Dolphins in their first year as an NCAA Division I program ever in the history of women's basketball at LeMoyne.
Grimes' first two seasons at LeMoyne concluded with back-to-back trips to the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament.
Last season, Grimes would aid the team in advancing to their first-ever WNIT, meaning that she led the Dolphins to a national postseason berth 100% of the time as their head coach, securing three-straight years of national postseason presence.
Grimes takes over a Binghamton program that finished 14-17 this past season.
The job became open when former head coach Bethann Shapiro-Ord and the university parted ways.
Grimes has also spent time on staff with the women's basketball programs at Xavier University under then-head coach Melanie Moore, University at Albany under then-head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson, and Syracuse University under then-head coach Quentin "Coach Q" Hillsman.
She is a 2003 graduate of Siena College, achieving a Bachelor's of Science degree in marketing and management while playing four seasons on the Saints Women's Basketball team under then-head coach Castelli and then-assistant coach Hillsman. In her time as a Saint, Grimes started in 93 of the 119 games she played in, scoring a total of 770 points to go with 288 rebounds, 220 assists, and 123 steals.
