It’s Been A Minute…

The Syracuse Orange and Miami Hurricanes have not faced off against one another in the Dome in over two decades.

When they meet there on Saturday, November 30, 2024, it will be exactly 22 years to the date and day of the week since their last meeting in the Dome, which was Saturday, November 30, 2002.

That contest came when both teams were in the same conference as well, but back in 2002 each called the Big East Conferenc home, where now they will face off for the first time in the Dome as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Their last meeting in the Dome ended in favor of the Hurricanes, 49-7.

Overall, the Orange have lost their last five games against the Hurricanes, and 11 of their last 13.

Miami leads the head-to-series 15-7.

Syracuse’s last win versus Miami, however, did happen in the Dome, by the score of 66-13 back on November 28, 1998, which was also their largest margin of victory ever against the ‘Canes.

This meeting, their 23rd all-time, will feature the top two quarterbacks in the nation in passing yards, leading all of NCAA Division I-A, or FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision), which has over 130 schools.

Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord is first in the nation with 3,946 yards.

Miami quarterback Cam Ward is second in the nation at 3,774 yards through the air.

Fran Brown has aided the Orange to an 8-3 record overall (4-3 in the ACC) in not only his first season as the team’s head coach, but in his first-ever season at the helm of a football program.

Mario Cristobal is in his third season leading the Hurricanes, helping guide the team from 5-7 in 2022-23 to 7-6 in 2023-24 to 10-1 this season so far, including being 6-1 currently in ACC play.

Syracuse is looking for a 9-3 regular-season finish which would probably place them in a late-December Bowl game in a warm climate.

With a victory in this contest, Miami would advance to play the SMU Mustangs in the ACC Championship Game, and would more-than-likely keep them in the good graces of the College Football Playoff Committee, who already has them as a top-six team in the rankings despite them not leading the ACC as well as not being a lock for the ACC Championship bout.

So it all comes down to this…

Will the Orange play spoiler?

Or will the Hurricanes extend their streak to six in a row versus their former Big East foe?

We will find out in the early evening at the Dome when the dust settles on a game 22 years in the making.
