Michael Johnson to Coach 'Cuse TEs

According to my sources, Michael Johnson, who was hired by Dino Babers to coach the wide receivers on the Syracuse Orange football team, will remain on staff for new head coach Fran Brown and will shift to coaching the tight ends.

Johnson oversaw the wide receivers under Babers for two seasons, 2022 and 2023.

He has never strictly coached a tight ends unit before, so this will be another piece to add to his resume of over two decades of experience in coaching. Johnson was the wide receivers coach at Oregon State from 1997-98 before moving over to leading the quarterbacks in 1999. From there, he went from college football to the National Football League (NFL), coaching the quarterbacks as a member of the San Diego Chargers' staff from 2000-01. He would go on to coach on three other NFL staffs, in charge of the wide receivers in 2002 and then the quarterbacks from 2003-05 with the Atlanta Falcons, the wide receivers for the Baltimore Ravens from 2006-07, and the quarterbacks of the San Francisco 49ers before overseeing their entire offense as 49ers' offensive coordinator in 2010. Johnson's second opportunity as offensive coordinator came with the UCLA Bruins when he returned to collegiate world in 2011. He would serve as head coach of the football program at The King's Academy in Tallahassee, Florida, from 2014-16, lead the Oregon Ducks' wide receivers in 2017-18 and then the wide receivers of the Mississippi State Bulldogs in 2019. Johnson's last stop before Syracuse was as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the FAU Owls.
